What is VoIP?
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. In other words, it's a way of having a normal telephone conversation using the Internet, rather than your normal telephone line. The BIG advantage is the fact that it is SO AMAZINGLY CHEAP!
How cheap? Well, basically, you can ring any landline telephone in Australia, as well as the most popular other countries (USA, UK, New Zealand, most of Europe, most of Asia, etc etc - basically just about everywhere) for 10c UNTIMED - yes, talk as long as you like for only 10c!!
You can also call Australian mobile phones for only 15c per minute! There's no flagfall or connection fee, and it's billed by the second, too, so if you only want to make a quick call, it could be even cheaper. A 30 second call will only cost you 7.5 cents! This is a HUGE saving for many people, as calls to mobile phones are normally one of the quickest ways to blow out your phone bill.
OK. So how do you do it?
All you need is a broadband Internet connection and an adapter that lets you connect your normal telephone to the Internet. Oh, and an account with a VSP (VoIP Service Provider) - which is very easy to organise. Once it's set up, you just use your normal telephone as you always have - pick it up and dial. The only difference is that your call is sent through the Internet instead of down your telephone line. It allows you to ring anyone, anywhere in the world, just like you always could - only SO much cheaper.
You could find that the cost of setting up your VoIP system is recovered in the savings that you make over only a couple of months.
