Buying a New Computer System

When you're buying a new computer system I believe that you should be able to get something that's made just for you. There are so many parts available, it's not difficult to have a computer that does exactly what you want, fits perfectly on your desk - and, of course, looks good!

While it may be convenient to be able to just walk into a shop and buy something "off the shelf", frequently you're getting something that's been around for a little while, just waiting for someone to come along and buy it. It may be old stock, a superceded model, or just not quite exactly what you need. Many computer manufacturers keep large quantities of stock so that they are ready to build a computer when required. The problem is that, as you can imagine, computers change so quickly. They're always bringing out new models of everything. Faster, smaller, more reliable, more features... the list goes on. If they keep supplies of everything on hand, they end up with parts in stock that have been superceded - and they have to do something with them. So they discount them to get rid of old stock, or put them all together to make something that they can sell - which is rarely going to be exactly what you're looking for.

Also, I don't sell "pre-built" computers - i.e. reselling computers made by other people. Honestly, I don't know what parts have been used, how they were built and how much care was taken in the assembly or set-up of the computer. Since I believe in everything being of the best quality, I really only feel comfortable knowing that I have carefully selected every component in a computer system. Each computer that I build is made to suit you. Each component is selected to ensure the highest quality and best performance. While this means that it might take a few days to get all the parts ordered in for your new computer, it also means that you are getting the best, latest parts available, and that the parts are exactly what you require - rather than just using whatever I happen to have in stock.

I believe in providing the best possible computer to suit your needs and budget. I will go through your exact requirements and search through all of my suppliers to find the best parts to suit your needs. Your new computer is then carefully built and tested to ensure that everything is working just the way you expect it to.

I believe in providing peace-of-mind with every new computer, so all systems that I build come STANDARD with a TWO YEAR ONSITE WARRANTY, within the City of Greater Bendigo. If you happen to be outside that area... I'm sure we can arrange something.

To allow me to offer this, I endeavour to use only components that have AT LEAST a two year warranty from the manufacturer. But, warranty aside, they still have to be good quality, reliable parts.

So how do I choose the parts that go into my computer systems? Here's a few examples...

The case - so many computers are built using whatever cheap case is available, on the grounds that it's "just a box". Well, yes, it IS just a box. The computer will perform exactly the same no matter what box you use. But there are other things to consider. Firstly, will the power button break after a few months of use? It happens. A lot. Will the little door that covers the USB ports fall off? Is there adequate cooling for the internal components? Is the case so flimsy that every time you move it, everything inside the case flexes, causing bad connections and subsequent unreliability? Is it just plain NOISY? These are the problems you often face with el-cheapo cases - which is why I won't use them.

Will it fit on your desk? Does it look good? There are SO many cases available, why settle for whatever you're given? Not everyone has the same requirements when it comes to a computer, and I believe in building computers to suit the individual. So if you'd like a big case with plenty of room for future expansion - no problem. Want something that fits neatly under your monitor, or in a tight corner of your desk? Can do. How about a big, flashy case with lights and a perspex window to see all the neat goodies inside? Just ask. Cases are also available with air filtering for use in a dusty environment - something that computers don't like all that much. Whatever case you need, I will endeavour to track it down for you.

The power supply - this is a very much underrated component of a computer system. Sure, any power supply will work, but not all power supplies are created equal. As with other components, I only use quality power supplies with a minimum 2 year warranty. I won't use junky, el-cheapo power supplies. Although they will still provide power to all the components in your computer, they have a reputation for being unreliable and often just stop working for no apparent reason. They are also notorious for causing system problems. If they don't supply well-regulated, decent quality power to all system components, the result can be intermittant crashes and a computer that just generally runs badly. Nobody wants a computer that's unreliable.

Major system components, e.g. the CPU, motherboard, memory, hard drive etc, are chosen for reliability, value and performance. I won't use parts that aren't backed by a reputation of quality.

The thing is, you don't have to spend a fortune to get decent quality parts - it's just a case of taking the time to select the right parts for the job.

And that's exactly what I do with every computer system I build.
